Just got back from a vacation where I put the lens to it’s first real rest. In good light, the auto-focus speed was good. In low light – it was VERY slow and sometimes “hunted” for a few seconds before giving up. This is a consistent review comment so if you are looking for consistent and perfect AF with USM speed, pass on this lens, you will not be happy. The IQ was pretty good but I made sure to keep the aperture in the sweet spot (f/8.0 give or take a stop) as much as possible while zooming through the lens’ focal range. The image stabilization (Tamron’s VC system) worked GREAT. It “locks” onto the frame and reduces motion dramatically. It works much differently than Canon – some reviews say it is as good or better – others say not so – I say you try both and judge for yourself which system suites your shooting style. I was able to shoot telephotos (270mm) while standing on a moving ship that would otherwise be blurred. There are a number of technical reviews out there that cover every nuance of this lens’ performance characteristics. My brief experience confirmed what the experts have already said. If you want an all in one 15X lens with IS and can live with slow auto focus under low light conditions, then you will be happy. The convenience of not swapping lenses and having the power to Z-O-O-O-O-M over such a range is very attractive. This is a very solid super-zoom.
Help answer the question about Macro Canon
Macro and telephoto lens for Canon Rebel XS?
So I am new to the digital slr world. I have recently purchased a Canon EOS Rebel XS and am using Macro Canon the 18-55mm lens that came with it. I am really interested in shooting macro shoots, and I was a little disappointed when I found that I could not with this lens. I was wondering which macro lens or perhaps a macro/telephoto lens would be the best for a reasonable price?
