The built-in flash on my Olympus E-520 DSLR is fine for close-range situations with plenty of ambient light. In low light conditions it pre-flashes a lot to help the camera acquire focus, and for subjects beyond ten feet or so it is useless.
The Vivitar DF-383 flash works perfectly with my camera in both TTL and manual modes. The flash zoom stays in sync with the lens zoom. The pull-out diffuser and bounce cards provide some additional options. It has plenty of power for shooting across mid-sized banquet and conference rooms, etc. Recycle time is good. One of the best features is the red focus-assist beam, which eliminates the need for pre-flashes.
The DF-383 does not have radio control like the Olympus FL-36R, but it costs about one-third less. As an amateur, I do not yet need this capability.
