This is my first DA* lens and I must say I am very impressed. I am sad to say that my camera slipped off of a shelf from alomost 5 feet and on to a granite floor. The camera suffered virtually no damage and the lens was perfect, not a mark or a scratch. Both worked perfectly after the fall. I am very impressed with pentax. This is a great lens, it is great for outdoor shots and can produce some excellent evening as well as some indoor shots. If you like lots of low light photography you may want to get a faster lens but at 2.8 it performs real well. I can definately say this is a very sharp lens and dont listen to all the pentax haters out there pentax makes some of the best products in my opinion. Also pentax has a long history and with so many lenses that will fit their camera bodies you just cant go wrong. The DA* 50-135 is a pretty large lens so be ready for the heft, although it is still smaller then similar lenses from canikon. All movement is within the lens wich is a nice feature. The sdm focus motor is virtually silent, all to be heard is the movement of the parts inside the lens while focusing. Focusing is fairly quick and can hunt a tiny bit if you are really close (remember its not a macro lens) to the subject or there is an extreme lack of light. This is normal for pentax and i have the k20d but i think it is much improved with the k7. Either way the focusing is still excellent and would not be a problem for most people, it is still plenty fast. I have done a little macro work with this lens and the images are pretty nice…. had to crop a little and the images came out a little soft but it is capable of a little macro work wich is nice, just remember you will probably have to manually focus if you want to do any macro. I posted two pics in the customer image gallery and they are both in a strip mall during the evening…. beautifull lens. I highly recommend this lens it is very versatile. I have only really been able to test this lens for about a day and look forward to using it for some portrait/glamour shots. If you are looking for a pro grade lens get it. If you dont have any da* lenses i think this is perfect for your first DA* lens. I promise you will be pleased!
Help answer the question about Sdm Lens
Does Pentax have a lens system?
The question is a little misleading because obviously they so. I am surprised though that when asking about DSLRs people are sometimes urged to go with Canon/Nikon because of their large selection of lenses. What baffles me though is the average consumer will own how many lenses? 3 or 4 maybe? These are the officially on sale right now Pentax lenses:- smc DA 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 ED AL [IF] DC WR smc DA 10-17 mm / 3,5~4,5 ED (IF) Fisheye zoom smc DA 12-24 mm / 4,0 ED AL(IF) smc DA Sdm Lens 16-45 mm / 4,0 ED AL smc DA* 16-50mm F2.8 ED AL (IF) SDM smc DA 17-70mm f/4.0 AL (IF) SDM smc DA 18-55mm II f/3.5-5.6 ED AL (IF) smc DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL WR smc DA 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 smc DA* 50-135mm F2.8 ED (IF) SDM smc DA 50-200mm f/4-5.6 ED smc DA 50-200mm f/4.0-5.6 ED WR smc DA 55-300mm f/4.0-5.8 ED smc DA 60-250 f/4.0 ED (IF) SDM smc DA 14 mm / 2,8 ED (IF) smc DA 35mm f/2.4 AL smc DA* 55mm f/1.4 SDM smc DA* 200mm f/2.8 ED(IF) SDM smc DA* 300mm f/4.0 ED (IF) SDM smc DFA 50mm / 2.8 Macro smc DFA 100 mm / 2.8 Macro smc D-FA 100 mm f/2,8 Macro WR smc DA 15mm f/4 ED AL Limited smc DA 21mm f/3.2 AL Limited DA 70mm f/2.4 Limited Silver DA 40mm f/2.8 Limited Silver smc DA 35mm f/2.8 macro smc DA 40 mm / 2,8 Limited DA 21mm f/3.2 AL Limited Silver smc DA 70mm f/ 2.4 AL Limited smc FA 31 / 1,8 AL Limited smc FA 43 mm / 1,9 Limited smc FA 77 mm / 1,8 Limited (Not forgetting of course full support from Tamron and Sigma) Does the average consumer/amateur/semi-pro really need a greater selection of lenses than that?
