I have been wanting a macro lens, but the price of a real macro at 200mm is alot. I decided to try extention tubes before I took the leap to a real macro lens. These tubes are more money than many other types but I did not want a cheesy tube holding some of my high priced lenses. Decided on the Kenco and, wow!!! I put a basic 28mm-135mm lens with the tubes on my 40D. I am very impressed, I am shooting inches away from the subject and getting so close that I clearly get the sections of a house fly’s eye. A macro that can do that clearly is over a thousand dollars.

The only thing a noticed is that I am focusing in manual mode, as at this close range the lens can’t zero in on the subject. But then the DOF at this distance is so shallow, you would need to manually fine tune the focus anyway. So don’t buy this lens for the auto focus if you are going for real thight macros.

Bottom line there are alot of cheap tubes for under $30. They will all give you a close shot as there are not any optics. The other factor is if you can trust them to hold a nice lens. If a cheap tube cracks and drops your lens, is it a real savings. These tubes clik tight and lock just like your lens. These tubes are well worth the money.
